Innovative structural designs can be achieved through topology optimization techniques that are capable of maximizing the performance of a structural system. The bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization (BESO) method has been well developed for this purpose. This paper describes the latest developments of BESO for various optimization problems, including tension-only or compression-only structures, energy absorption, dynamics and multiple constraints.
